McLaren F1 GT: The Unicorn
The McLaren F1 GT is the rarest of the rare. Only 3 units were ever built (one prototype, two customer cars). Why? To race in 1997, McLaren had to build a “Longtail” version of the F1 GTR to compete with the Porsche 911 GT1. FIA rules required a road-legal homologation version. The F1 GT is that car.
The Longtail Design
The F1 GT is visually distinct from the standard F1.
- The Nose: The front overhang is longer to improve downforce.
- The Tail: The rear bodywork is extended (the “Longtail”) to smooth airflow and increase top speed.
- No Wing: Unlike the LM or GTR, the GT does not have a massive rear wing. The elongated body provides enough stability on its own.
Interior: Luxury
While the LM is stripped out, the GT is trimmed like the standard road car. It has leather, AC, and the standard exhaust setup. It was designed to be the ultimate high-speed cruiser.
Rarity
Because only 3 exist (one Burgundy, one Black, one Dark Green), they almost never change hands.
- Value: Theoretical value is $30 million+. It is the Holy Grail for McLaren collectors.
