Koenigsegg One:1: The World’s First Megacar
In 2014, Christian von Koenigsegg unveiled a car with a simple, mathematical goal: One horsepower for every kilogram of weight. The result was the Koenigsegg One:1.
- Power: 1,360 PS (1,341 hp).
- Weight: 1,360 kg (curb weight with 50% fuel).
- Ratio: 1:1.
Because 1,360 PS equals exactly 1 Megawatt of power, Koenigsegg coined the term “Megacar.” Only 6 customer units (plus one prototype) were ever built.
Engineering: 3D Printing and Carbon
The One:1 was a testbed for new manufacturing technologies.
- 3D Printed Turbo: It featured the world’s first 3D-printed variable geometry turbo housing. This allowed for complex internal shapes that were impossible to cast or machine.
- 3D Printed Titanium: The exhaust tip is a single piece of 3D-printed titanium, saving 400 grams.
- Carbon Chassis: The carbon fiber monocoque is so stiff (65,000 Nm/degree) that the roof is removable without compromising handling.
Aerodynamics: Active Everything
The One:1 generates 610 kg of downforce at 260 km/h, rising to 830 kg at 440 km/h.
- Top Wing: The massive rear wing is top-mounted (hanging from pylons) to keep the underside clean for better airflow. It is fully active, changing angle for braking or top speed.
- Front Flaps: Under the front bumper, flexible carbon flaps bend using hydraulic actuators to channel air under the car.
GPS Suspension
The car features an active suspension system connected to the GPS.
- Smart Lifts: If you raise the nose to go over a speed bump at home, the car remembers the GPS location. The next time you approach that spot, it raises the nose automatically.
- Track Corners: On a race track, the suspension can stiffen up specific corners before you turn in, based on GPS data.
Performance
- 0-400 km/h: Approx 20 seconds.
- Top Speed: Theoretically 440 km/h (273 mph), though never officially tested due to tire limits at the time.
- Lateral G: It can pull 2.0g in corners on road tires (Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2).
The One:1 is arguably the most important car Koenigsegg ever built. It transitioned the company from a “boutique” builder into a technological leader that scares even Bugatti.
