De Tomaso P72: Retro Done Right

De Tomaso is back. The brand famous for the Pantera has been revived by the same team behind the Apollo IE. Their first car, the P72, is a tribute to the failed De Tomaso P70 prototype from the 1960s (a joint project between Alejandro de Tomaso and Carroll Shelby).

The P72 is widely considered one of the most beautiful cars of the modern era.

Design: 60s Curves

The bodywork is pure 1960s Le Mans prototype.

  • Curves: It has voluptuous fenders, a glass canopy bubble, and copper details.
  • Chassis: Underneath the retro skin lies the cutting-edge carbon fiber monocoque from the Apollo Intensa Emozione (IE). It is Le Mans prototype safety tech wrapped in a dress.

The Engine: American Muscle

True to De Tomaso history (Pantera, Mangusta), the P72 uses an American V8.

  • Source: A 5.0-liter Supercharged V8 from the Ford Mustang, tuned by Roush.
  • Power: 700 hp.
  • Sound: It sounds like a NASCAR. The whine of the supercharger complements the deep rumble of the V8.

The Interior: Jewel Box

The interior is the star of the show.

  • Materials: Polished copper, diamond-quilted leather, and machined aluminum. The gauges look like expensive Swiss watches.
  • The Shifter: The exposed manual gear linkage is a work of art. It is a functional sculpture in the center console.

Exclusive

Only 72 units will be built. The price is roughly €750,000, which is surprisingly “affordable” compared to a Pagani or Koenigsegg, given the level of bespoke craftsmanship. The P72 proves that you don’t need 2,000 horsepower to be special. You just need style.
